Enucleation is the surgical removal of the entire ocular globe and its contents: the motor muscles are disconnected and subsequently re-attached to a spherical orbital implant (made of silicone, hydroxyapatite or porous polyethylene) surrounded with sclera tissue.
This procedure is recommended whenever the eye has undergone serious lesion, when it no longer functions, or when it causes pain, since its damaged state can endanger the other, healthy eye via sympathetic ophthalmia.
