Evisceration is the surgical removal of all eye globe content while preserving the scleral shell.
A spherical orbital implant made of hydroxyapatite or porous polyethylene (Medpor) is placed in the socket to replace the extracted content: its size depends on the volume of the eye socket.
Evisceration can be preferred as an alternative to enucleation whenever the scleral shell is in a state that can be preserved, and provided that no progressive intraocular lesion is involved.
